Reflections on the Right “Fit”.
“Fit” is a term one often hears in architecture and refers to a harmonious balance between multiple elements or factors. The concept of “Fit” is one that I utilize in the process of collection-building. How would this new artwork enhance the existing collection? Is it a dynamic or noteworthy addition? I have assisted clients for many years to build their collections in a way where the sum of the whole exceeds the individual pieces. In 2019, I found an exceptional geometric Anish Kapoor disc for a client whose collection is mostly focused on Abstract Expressionism. While a Kapoor may not seem like the obvious choice, it is incredible the way its mirrored mosaic-like surface provides an actual lens in which to reflect and reinterpret the works that hang around it. The Kapoor sculpture allows the collector to see his works in a new way, while also giving the collection a texture and new layer by adding an oblique but sophisticated new element which heightens the experience of the entire collection.
