OLAFUR ELIASSON AND MOCA DIRECTOR JOHANNA BURTON AT USC
SEPTEMBER 10, 2024

On the eve of Olafur Eliasson’s new work at MoCA LA which coincides with the Getty’s new iteration of Pacific Standard Time, MoCA Director, Johanna Burton, had an insightful conversation last night in front of a full house at USC. The discussion touched on a number of optics including the environment but  it ended on Eliasson’s ”Am I Open…” question set he shared with the audience. These are questions he posits to himself to put himself in a more open mindset. It produced my favorite quote of the evening:
“If you are not open to wonder it is going to be difficult for you to have a wonderful experience”.

FROM MY PORTFOLIO: OLGA DE AMARAL AT THE MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE OF ART.
AUGUST 16, 2024

It was wonderful to see this Olga de Amaral “Muro Tejido 82” (1972) once again that I sold 7 years ago. It now resides in a new home in the permanent collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. A colleague tipped me off to its existence in Los Angeles and, once consigned, I had to ship it back to de Amaral’s studio in Bogota first and then to New York for the sale. These rare pieces in horsehair are “woven walls” and represent perhaps the most experimental of her textile works. Unlike her later, more hybridized work, she was not painting over the threads but instead leaving the weave itself at the fore. She used a technique in this piece where she only uses vertical threads so the weave and its negative space are particularly important to the understanding of the much more sculptural nature of the work. As a testament to the importance of the early pieces from the 60s and 70s, works from this period have seen a resurgence in interest from curators including a selection of a work from 1969 in the 2024 Venice Biennial.
