collection-building in Montecito

One of the most gratifying aspects of my advisory is collection-building. Leaning on my background as a curator, I assist clients in both building and shaping their collection. Our goal is to assemble a collection where the sum is greater than its individual parts. This process involves recognizing the “threads” of the collection and identifying what excites the client. Everyone has points of interest that are innate, whether they are drawn to aesthetics of Abstract Expressionist practices or the texture and materiality of textiles, for example. While collection-building can be an ongoing process, I brought a major project to an end point this week with the layout of over 80 artworks in one of the oldest and finest homes in Montecito. Many of the 80 works were acquired over the last four years, including the marquis pieces in the collection by Helen Frankenthaler, Philip Guston, Anish Kapoor, Adolf Gottlieb, Max Ernst, Gunther Forg, and David Hockney. It’s an extraordinary experience to look through the checklist as the works were mounted on the wall and sculptures were placed by crane into the expansive gardens on the property. There were so many wonderful people who helped to make this project happen from gallerists, to auction specialists, our brokerage team in New York, the client’s fantastic interior designer and assistant and, of course, a client with great taste and an incredible passion for collecting.
